Grand Casino, Southport
We were proud to be entrusted with the external restoration works to the iconic Grand Casino in Southport a landmark building undergoing a significant redevelopment ahead of its much anticipated grand opening. The project demanded a high level of attention to detail and heritage sensitivity, with works focused on preserving and enhancing the building’s original character.
Scope of Works
Our scope included:
- Faience Repairs – Sensitive restoration of damaged and degraded faience blocks using colour-matched repair techniques.
- Repointing – Repointing of façades using traditional lime mortar to match the original joint profiles and aesthetics.
- DOFF Cleaning – Low-pressure, superheated water cleaning of façades to remove years of dirt, biological growth, and environmental staining without damaging the historic materials.
- Rust Staining Removal – Specialist chemical treatments to remove unsightly rust staining while protecting the integrity of surrounding surfaces.
- Render Print Detail – Installation of a render system with precision-cut joint lines to mimic original faience block detailing where full replacements were not possible.
- Sealant Works – Replacement and renewal of perimeter sealants to ensure water-tightness and durability.
Challenges & Solutions
This project posed several unique challenges:
Weather Dependency: Given the coastal location, we experienced frequent and unpredictable changes in weather. Works such as pointing and DOFF cleaning had to be carefully scheduled around dry periods to ensure correct curing and effectiveness.
As part of a multi-contractor site, sequencing was essential. We coordinated daily with site management and other trades to avoid clashes and maintain safe working environments.
With a fixed grand opening date for the casino, timing was critical. Our team worked flexibly and extended hours when required to ensure all restoration works were completed to the highest standard within the client’s tight timeframe.
Outcome
The restoration works were completed on schedule, contributing to the revitalisation of this Southport landmark. The façade was transformed its rich detailing and historic features now clearly visible and protected for years to come.
Our team’s expertise in heritage materials and efficient project coordination helped deliver a successful outcome that met both aesthetic and performance expectations.
